Capoliveri

Enchanting Capoliveri, ancient castle on a hill, fortified by the Pisans in the 12th century, born in the Etruscan-Roman period, in a strategic position from which it was possible to control the south seas and the west seas, has an architecture that preserves an almost medieval atmosphere , sober, but at the same time pleasing. It owes its name to the Latin 'Caput Liberum' (free hill) that ascended in the Roman ages.

Carefully placed on a knoll in the heart of the mining zone of Elba, between the iron mines of Mount Calamita and that of Ginevro, all brought together on the summit of a marvelous isolated ridge. From the panorama in Capoliveri, you can enjoy an incredibile view of the gulfs of Lacuna and di Campo. The coastline of Capoliveri is amongst the most enchanting on the island, with cliffs overhanging the sea and little inlets on the transparent sea.

On the western slope of the town, rising up on a beautiful panoramic knoll stands the elegant sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie (Graces) and the Madonna della Neve (snow), inside of which are paintings attributed to the school of Raffaello. In the surrounding area, you can also visit the ruins of the Church of San Mochele and the Fort Focardo that sits guard over the gulf of Longone. The Villa Foresi is worth a visit, found in the center of the Plains of Lacona that actually has an agricultural business that welcomes visitors to both the vineyards and the cellars.

Absolutely not to be missed is the "festa dell'innamorata" that is celebrated every 14th of July.
